Cyber Security Landscape for Business Leaders
The 2019 Cyber Security landscape compromised attacks that grew in sophistication as the year went by; most notable were ransomware and phishing attacks. This reminded businesses of the reality that despite the growth in sophistication of cybersecurity tools and protection practices, cyber-attacks equally increased in sophistication.
According to Check Point Cyber Security Report 2020, the top cyber-attack categories for 2019 were 38% Crypto miners, 28% Botnet, 27% Mobile attacks, 18% Banking attacks, 18% Info stealer, and 7% ransomware. The diversity of the cyber-attacks shows the growing concern for many cybersecurity experts on the growing sophistication and diversification of cyberattacks.
So, what should we expect from this year’s cyber threat landscape?
- Phishing attacks will get even more sophisticated. According to Microsoft, the number of inbound phishing emails has doubled since 2019. You can expect to see more targeted spear-phishing attacks in large numbers. This is due to open-source intelligence (OSINT) tools like Maltego and the easy availability of personal data on social media sites.
- Worms would most likely make a comeback. Worms have been key to cyber-attacks due to their ability to self-replicate easily. This year makes the comeback of worms high majorly due to a Microsoft flaw that affects computers and server operating systems and can let attackers remotely run malware or ransomware on vulnerable computers known as Bluekeep.
- Increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to scale-up attacks. Both AI and ML make attacks automatic and quicker and easier to carry out.
- Increase and diversification of Ransomware
- The rise in Social Media extortion attacks
- Increase in fileless attacks. Fileless attacks leverage a known application or even your systems operating system against you. This is done by exploiting known vulnerabilities.
