Pain of Ransomware impacts more than 100 Dental Practices
Complete Technology Solutions (CTS), a Colorado IT firm that specializes in providing managed IT services to dental offices was recently been the victim of ransomware attack. More than 100 dental practice offices had their computers infected.
CTS provides these dental offices with various services, including data backups, network security, and vice-over-IP phone service. The attack on Englewood, CO-based Complete Technology Solutions (CTS) apparently began on November 25, 2019 and still affecting many of its clients as the hackers compromised a remote administration tool used to remotely configure and troubleshoot client offices.
According to KrebsonSecurity, the compromised remote administration tool was not set up to require any secure authentication on the part of CTS’ dental clients before it connected to their systems.
The hackers demanded a $700,000 ransom after infecting the computers with a form of ransomware called “Sodinokibi” or “rEvil”. CTS declined to pay the ransom demand of $700,000 to unlock data at all impacted client offices.
KrebsonSecurity reports that some of those practices are trying to negotiate with the attackers to obtain keys to unlock their own data. The attack is still ongoing and many of the impacted offices are continuing to turn away patients as a result of the system outages. CTS President Herb Miner reportedly declined comment to any publication.
